The future of the Warren Lotas brand appears to be in a precarious position in the face of a Nike lawsuit
Warren Lotas, the man behind the Los Angeles streetwear brand he started in college and has since grown into a sought-after line of punk-inspired streetwear staples such as sweatshirts hoodie and sneakers, closed the brand’s e-commerce site and appears to have stopped posting on Instagram since his lawsuit by Nike on Wednesday Although Warren Lotas sells other products nothing is available for sale and the site just says it is « closed » It is impossible to determine if this is permanent and Lotas could not be reached for comment
Nike is suing the small brand for making and selling what Lotas calls « custom dunks » – shoes that make obvious use of the famous 35-year-old Nike shoe style, with minor tweaks and, according to Lotas , a luxury quality Warren Lotas Components « dunks » retail for around $ 300, but often hits the streetwear resale market at more than triple that price
Lotas released the latest version of his sneaker about two weeks ago, designed in partnership with Jeff Staple from another popular streetwear brand Staple Pigeon On Instagram, Lotas called the shoe an “official reinterpretation” of a « classic » shoe But it has not been endorsed by Nike, nor made a partnership with it, and the company has not

In his lawsuit in Los Angeles federal court against Lotas as an individual and his brand, Nike called Lotas a “bad actor” simply “promoting and selling highly coveted counterfeit Nike Dunks »
« Nike protects its iconic sneaker designs and its intellectual property in those designs, eliminating bad actors who are undermining the DNA of sneaker culture by promoting and selling counterfeits, » the company wrote
Ironically, Staple of Staple Pigeon today only posted a video on Instagram promoting a mini-documentary he participated in, produced by Nike, regarding the creation of Dunks and their continued popularity.
Nike added that while Lotas hasn’t made their ‘version’ of Dunks for a long time, « there is already confusion in the market as to whether these are legitimate customizations or illegal knockoffs. »
The company is suing Lotas for unspecified damages, all of its profits on the shoes, and for delivering unsold goods to Nike « for destruction » to keep them off the market
