What can the Hammers fan expect from new signing Said Benrahma after the Algeria winger completes his move from Brentford
West Ham have seemed somewhat reluctant in the transfer market in recent months, but after a relatively quiet window the club have finally made their signing
Said Benrahma has joined Brentford on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy after the initially agreed £ 30million permanent transfer was questioned after issues arose
The Algeria international will now add to the offensive options David Moyes has at his disposal for the coming campaign and beyond, with the hope that Benrahma’s quality will translate once he steps up to the level of the Premier League, as he has proven one of the most influential artists of the championship in recent years
So what exactly did the Hammers buy? What type of player is Benrahma and what can supporters expect from him in the coming months? We will take a look
At only 25 years old and therefore entering what are commonly recognized as peak years, Benrahma is a very attacked and unpredictable striker.
Usually playing on the left flank, he tends to cut inside his favorite foot before shooting, which he does a lot. In fact, over 350 outfielders racked up more than 1,000 minutes in the league last season, with Benrahma leading the way in 90 shots.
His 38 efforts for 90 – although they weren’t technically made as a striker – were notable, only Sergio Aguero averaging more in the Premier League followed closely by Mohamed Salah’s 36 for 90
While Benrahma’s shooting numbers capture his threat, they also signal his tendency to shoot from virtually anywhere, with his last 75 attempts at goal visualized below
He shot off the penalty bench 98 times last season, which was the most in the division and was just 29 short of Charlton Athletic’s long-distance total as a ‘team
As a result, he’s not particularly clinical and usually requires a good number of tries to find the net, which he did 13 times last year (excluding penalties) while registering eight assists.
This level of production is encouraging, especially for a great player and it gives some insight into his individual quality
To say that Benrahma is an expressive player would be an understatement; he is very engrossed in his own game but – fortunately – this game is very strong
The dribbling numbers he posts epitomize his style, with one player averaging more than 90 dribbling attempts in the Championship last season
To put it in perspective, Benrahma tried to face opposing players a little less often than Wilfried Zaha and Allan Saint-Maximin in the English top flight, but more often than Christian Pulisic and Raheem Sterling

Benrahma presents himself as a high-risk talent who regularly offers attractive rewards; he found the penalty area with passes more frequently than all but three players last season, while placing ninth in deep passes
On the negative side, this haphazard approach to decision-making causes Benrahma to lose the ball around 25% of the time, but it can be argued that it’s worth it.
Ultimately, it’s reasonable to view West Ham’s latest addition as a difference factor. As long as he’s presented with a platform to play in, Benrahma can decide matches almost on his own, mostly by because of its unorthodox attack style and the element of surprise it offers
As a straightforward, wide forward whose daring play tends to be a bit wasteful at times, we hope Moyes appreciates the value his new man offers rather than focusing too much on his imperfections.
