The 45-year-old actor revealed his soul in the September 25 episode of his podcast, « Armchair Expert, » where he detailed his recent relapse shortly after celebrating 16 years of sobriety with his wife Kristen Bell
Shepard began by admitting his first mistake, which happened eight years ago while visiting his then ill father, a cancer patient who the actor gave Percocet to for his pain relief.
Shepard – who was prescribed Vicodin at home – said he took double his other prescription by bonding with his father in his final days
“You know we had so little in common and so much friction,” recalls Shepard “But the no. One thing we had in common was that we were both addicted to f-king and we weren’t. ‘had never used anything together And we sat there stoned and looked at the lake And at that point I felt elation and I was just happy «
Bell then showed up by surprise to offer support, which led Shepard to admit that he had relapsed
“That was eight years ago,” Shepard continued, adding later, “I have now had this experience where I did this, I felt bad, but there is no had fallout It was like, I felt bad, I said I felt bad, then I moved on and it was good «
Due to multiple motorcycle injuries over the years – resulting in seven surgeries – Shepard has consistently struggled to heal himself for legitimate pain rather than fuel his addiction
“I cycle a lot,” he explained “After sometimes riding on the track, I feel like I have the right to take two Vicodins at the end of the day because it hurts It doesn’t seem so crazy to me yet «
Six months ago, Shepard realized he had a problem when he found himself « more and more shady » with his pill taking
« In the last eight weeks maybe I don’t know I’m on them all day I’m allowed to be on them at a certain dosage because I have a prescription And then I increase that too, « he confessed » And then all the prescriptions run out and I only take 30 mil of Oxys I bought every time I decide I can do it «
Things hit the fan when Shepard started hiding the habit from his wife, Bell, and lying to his podcast co-host, Monica Padman
“And I lie to other people and I know I have to stop,” he admitted. “But my tolerance is growing so quickly that I’m now in a situation where I’m taking, you know, eight 30 hours a day, and I know that’s an amount that’s going to cause a really bad withdrawal And I’m starting to get really scared, and I’m starting to feel really lonely And I just have this huge secret «
« I’m now starting to get pretty noticeably detoxifying and withdrawn, » he added « And I’m lying and I’m starting to say I’m having an arthritis flare »
Less than two weeks ago, Shepard confessed to his co-host, telling him, « I’m enlightening you and I know that I am And I make you feel crazy and I make sure that Kristen is feeling crazy «
He then apologized to his wife and Padman, adding that he feared he would relapse again with even worse substances
« I was worried that if I ever have one, I’ll drink and make coke, » he said « I haven’t had beer for 16 years and I haven’t not sniffed a line in 16 years And if I ever have one then I might as well have what I really want and start over And my fear of that is if I do that it might take me three years to put it back in the cage and I risk dying «
