World News – US – D’Wan Mathis draws the start for the Georgia Bulldogs

D’Wan Mathis drew the undercentre start for the Georgia Bulldogs against the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday afternoon

The Bulldogs have been looking for a successor for Jake Fromm after leaving the NFL this offseason Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has brought in two transfers Jamie Newman and JT Daniels to compete for the starting role alongside of the Mathis, Stetson Bennett and Carson Beck quarter-purses

Every quarterback had a chance to win the starting role Newman had the inside track before deciding to retire ahead of the season His decision opened the door to more opportunities for other quarterbacks

Mathis will have the opportunity to lead the new offensive unit He has attracted considerable support from former Georgian players who asked him for the opportunity to start

« I know Coach Smart is going to make the best decision for the team, » said Detroit Lions running back and former Georgian star D’Andre Swift said « But, me personally, I would like to see D’Wan Mathis there I think he will bring a different style of play I read about him and he looks great in camp He’s ready and looked really mature I want to see him there I really want to see him there «

It was a long time back in the field for Mathis Last season, doctors found out he had a cyst in his brain and Mathis had surgery.By recovering, Mathis was able to learn the playbook and prepare for a potential return to action

Smart believes Mathis learned a lot from backing up Fromm last season He told local reporters the quarterback experience would serve him well as he made his debut in the season

“I would probably say I’m just up to the task,” Smart said of Mathis’s mentality. “I think all the quarterbacks that were here last year – both, really, and a few kids at foot – really learned that poise is such a big and important part [and] that it doesn’t matter how you practice, or how poor you train, or how good the game was, or how point the game was bad – the next game is the only one that matters I think calm is a big part of it, and I think each of those guys learned that from Jake [Fromm] I think Jake had a set routine that ‘he did during the week, and he set a pretty high standard for the quarterback position in terms of preparation »

Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken worked with Mathis at fall camp He said open competition had been good for Mathis He also discussed what he was looking for as Mathis entered in the role of starting quarterback

“So when you talk about precision, mental toughness and athletic ability to escape and play are probably the top three,” said Monken “I’m probably missing a few of my head, but this are quite important characteristics It is difficult to be a statue, to be constantly explosive and to be able to move football «

The Bulldogs will be looking to replicate their 307 points per game on average this season They must do so with new faces on the offensive line and new playmakers playing key roles

At 6ft 6in Mathis brings a different dynamic to potentially get the job done He’s a double-threat quarterback who has the ability to play with his legs The Bulldogs have given him some help in the stars Emerging George Pickens, James Cook and Zamir White The playmaker group is a perfect fit for Monken’s attack

So far, Monken has also brought energy to accelerate the learning curve Smart hopes the energy infusion will help the entire starting unit shine early this season

“Todd brought a lot of energy to the attacking side of the ball,” said Smart. “He’s very demanding He has an expectation of what it should look like And his job, and what he likes to do, it is trying to do each individual job better than the next Can we loop better than the other team can loop? Can we perform a dig route better than the other team can perform a dig route? Can we frame these things better than the other team? And if we do these things, we will be successful «

Mathis is in charge to help make the necessary adjustments and lead the way through the 2020 season

“You want them to move the attack and score points,” said Smart. “I know it’s easier said than done but, you know, it’s a Catch 22 here. you’re going to call games designed for a certain quarterback and you have certain styles, maybe JT or Carson or D’Wan are all different quarterbacks, right now we’re trying to figure out what they can do »

If all goes well, Mathis could have more opportunities against Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Tennessee this season
