While the big dogs of the Texas football world haven’t even started their seasons, the smaller schools — those in Class 4A and lower — are well into their seasons and completing the annual traditions that go along with action on the gridiron.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, larger schools had the opening of their seasons pushed back so the first games of their seasons start Sept. 24. But the smaller schools were allowed to start on time and are already four games into their seasons.
During its Friday night contest against Yoakum, the Needville Blue Jays announced their 2020 homecoming court and introduced the elected members of the school’s royalty.
Senior Amanda Nowak was crowned 2020 Homecoming Queen by 2019 Homecoming Queen Ashton Schiller prior to the start of Friday’s football game.
Other members of the court include sophomore Jailyn Webb; freshman Jamison Koeppen; junior Isabelle Guevara; and seniors Jakerra Kiser, Jenna Lindemann and Jeselyn Argueta.
On the field, the hometown Blue Jays lost a heartbreaker 42-41 in overtime to the visiting Yoakum Bulldogs.
At the quarterback position, Baker finished the game 13 of 24 for 241 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Two touchdown passes went to senior Dax Bridges. Warncke rushed 25 times for 113 and three scores.
Up next for the Blue Jays is a Friday road game scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. in Sweeny. Both teams are 1-3 heading into the contest. It will be the last non-district game for Needville.
