Early searches for the doodle included sketches by Helene Leroux, who was inspired by Bulgarian folklore character Kuma Lisa, a fox who frequently plays the trickster, according to Google’s blog about the artwork. of art

Google says its doodle can be seen in Canada, the US, Argentina, Chile, Peru, France, Hungary, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Greece

Dr Stamen Grigorov was born on October 27, 1878 and marks his 142nd birthday today, but he also passed away on his birthday in 1945, at the age of 67

Grigorov grew up in the village of Studen Izvor, in the Trun region of western Bulgaria, according to the Google blog

In 1905, at the age of 27, Grigorov discovered the strain of bacillus that ferments milk into natural yogurt

Grigorov married in 1904, the year before he left to work as a research assistant in Geneva

To remind him of his home, his wife offered him Bulgarian culinary staples, including yogurt, according to the Google blog

The scientist was immediately intrigued by the reputed health benefits of yogurt, so he decided to inspect it under a microscope

He discovered the rod-shaped microorganism that causes yogurt to ferment and the bacteria was later renamed Lactobacillus bulgaricus in honor of its country of origin

But yogurt also has a long history in the country, with Bulgarians claiming the newspaper’s product was accidentally discovered by nomadic tribes around 4,000 years ago, according to the BBC

These nomads apparently carried their milk in animal skins during their journey, which created an environment ripe for bacteria growth and fermentation.

Elitsa Stoilova, assistant professor of ethnology at the University of Plovdiv, told the broadcaster: « It is true that yogurt was part of the diet of people for centuries in the Balkan countries It is a natural process that people have discovered in one way or another

But Grigorov’s discovery of Lactobacillus bulgaricus played a pivotal role in bringing yogurt to the West and making it the widely consumed product it is today

After his discovery in Geneva, Grigorov took a post as chief medical officer at a local hospital in his hometown of Trun the same year, the Google blog continues

But his groundbreaking discoveries didn’t stop there.In 1906, he published an article that demonstrated how penicillin fungi could be used to treat tuberculosis

A report on Bulgarian radio BNR reported that Grigorov was not credited with developing the first tuberculosis vaccine, usually attributed to French scientists Camille Guerin and Albert Calmette, due to « a strange confluence of events « 

Report says Grigorov did not get his credit for the vaccine because Bulgaria did not have a strong enough medical facility to back up his findings

Grigorov spent the rest of his life continuing his research and working as a doctor, saving thousands of lives until his death in 1945

In honor of his heritage, his hometown, Studen Izvor opened the Yogurt Museum in 2007, which includes documents and information on Grigorov’s life

The city also hosted a yogurt festival to mark the 110th anniversary of the discovery, which saw locals showcase homemade yogurt and cheese

According to the Australian government website, the Grigorov Glacier was named in 2010 and is 18 km long and 13 km wide on the southern coast of the Albena Peninsula on the island of Brabant in the archipelago by Palmer
