World News – US – ‘Making the most of’: Gophers fans keep the spirit of the match alive

A leisurely stroll down University Avenue in Minneapolis on Saturday afternoon presented nothing more than a handful of Gophers fans wandering aimlessly down the street

No loud sibling parties No crowded bars in Dinkytown No party tailgate in the shadow of TCF Bank Stadium

You never know the Gophers were hours away from hosting the Michigan Wolverines in arguably the hottest season opener in program history

In fact, with the coronavirus pandemic mandates limiting gatherings in the name of social distancing, it looked like a normal day on campus at first glance Take a closer look, however, and it was evident that some Gophers fans were doing their best to keep the matchday spirit alive.

There were a number of small gatherings on the front lawns of the fraternities – one group proudly displayed a sign that read: « YOU HONK, WE DRINK » There were fans dressed in Gophers clothes standing in line. in front of various bars in the Stadium Village There was a group of friends in the square outside the TCF Bank stadium making their best impression from Tanner Morgan to Rashod Bateman

« We wanted to get together as a group of friends and get ready for the game, » said Fletcher Hubbard « I’ve never really been to a college football game before We just try to soak up the surrounding atmosphere as much as possible It’s just good to get out here, throw the soccer ball and have fun with our friends »

His group of friends walked out of Territorial Hall early in the afternoon and planned to return to the dorms to watch the game

« It’s something fun to do, » said rookie Audrey Sylvester. « We thought since we can’t get into the stadium we should get as close as possible »

If the circumstances were different and the coronavirus pandemic was not yet spreading at a rapid pace, TCF Bank Stadium would certainly be full on Saturday ESPN’s College GameDay set would have been the perfect backdrop for that everyone would be tuned in – even if Lee Corso had chosen the Wolverines over the Gophers – and the students and alumni would have kept the party going until the time of the match with Mich Golden serving as the cornerstone

« You can tell something is going on, » rookie Isabella Spitznagle said « You don’t necessarily know it’s match day »

It’s the new normal for Gophers fans this year, and everyone is adjusting as best they can
