World News – US – Only 4% of UK gamers increased spending during pandemic early lockdown – CalvinAyrecom

New survey shows just 4% of UK gamers increased spending in early stages of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown

A new survey commissioned by the responsible gaming association GambleAware, funded by the industry and undertaken by YouGov, asked two groups of individuals in October 2019 about their gambling activity, with a follow-up investigation into the activity of the same groups in May 2020, which marked the start of the UK pandemic lockdown

Overall, the survey found a 10 point reduction in the number of people reporting participating in any form of gambling, from 49% in October 2019 to 39% in May 2020 Male players reported a larger drop (53% to 41%) compared to female players (36% to 31%), a change the authors attributed to the pandemic cessation of major league sports activity, on which the bets are mainly men

There were declines in activity across all gaming verticals, except online casino games (including slots), which fell from 15% stake last October to 23% in May The study found that the increase in online casinos was more significant among men (from 2% to 32%) than women (from 11% to 15%)

A UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) investigation found a significant increase in online slots activity in May compared to March and April, but a much smaller increase in other online casino games More recent UKGC surveys have shown a decline in active online slots players, although the vertical sector continues to represent larger losses per active customer than other gaming products.

The GambleAware survey found that more than half (52%) of gamers spent roughly the same amount of money on gaming products during the early blocking period compared to last October, while 41 % said they reduced their gambling spending in the same way interval Only 4% said they had increased their gambling spending during the first days of the lockdown

Gamers with a higher Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) were overrepresented in the ranks of high-spenders About a fifth of people with PGSI scores of eight or higher (at the high end of the spectrum) said they had increased their gambling spending

A higher percentage (7%) of players in the 18-34 demo were represented in this higher spending cohort than those aged 55 (2%), but younger players were also much more likely (11%) use safer play tools while on lockdown than their 55 elders (1%)

GambleAware Vice President Sian Griffiths found it ‘alarming’ that the lockdown resulted in increased gambling participation among the country’s most vulnerable groups Griffiths said it was crucial for government, charities and the National Health Service to work together to ensure proper surveillance of players as the country enters its second lockdown period
