Looks like Laverne Cox had some things to get off her chest at the Emmy awards. Last year, the actress made a statement on the event’s red carpet, bringing attention to the impending Supreme Court cases that involved the rights of LGBTQ+ communities. This year: she seemed to be talking about her own legacy within Hollywod.
After making an appearance on E!’s red carpet coverage, Cox returned in a new all-black sheer look to present an award during the ceremony.
« Good evening everyone, » she started her commentary. « I am living proof of the American dream that anyone in this country can lose the Emmy four years in the same category and yet somehow end up on this stage presenting an award to someone who probably didn’t … »
The ABC feed of the ceremony completely cut out audio, as the actress continued to speak. It was back seconds later.
« What happens to an American dream deferred? » she continued. « Does it shrivel up like a raisin in the sun? Stick to the script Laverne, stick to the script. And now here are the nominees for Writing in a Drama Series. »
Since the airing, users on social media who viewed the broadcast in Canada have revealed the segment aired in full there. According to their footage, Cox said « presenting an award to someone who probably didn’t effing vote for me. » The full unedited clip was also posted to the Television Academy’s YouTube account. Given that Cox altered her own speech so that she wouldn’t curese, we’re pretty confused about the need to cut the sound.
