A tiger almost tore the arm of a volunteer at Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, the animal rescue facility said on Thursday. The nonprofit said Candy Couser, who had volunteered for the organization for five years, was grabbed by a tiger named Kimba while she put her arm into a cage to open a door during feeding time around 8:30 a.m.. m.

« It is against our protocols for someone to cage part of their body with a cat, » Big Cat Rescue wrote in a statement. « Kimba grabbed her arm and almost tore it off by the shoulder. «

Another worker heard the excitement and came running when Kimba dropped his grip. One nurse helped stop the bleeding while another person used a belt as a tourniquet.

An ambulance arrived within 15 to 20 minutes. And couser was moved to St.. . Joseph’s hospital with « serious injuries ». «

« Candy was still conscious and insisted that she did not want Kimba Tiger to be harmed for this mistake, » Big Cat Rescue wrote in a statement. « He’s being quarantined for the next 30 days as a precaution, but only behaved normally due to the presence of food and the possibility. «

Big Cat Rescue was featured in Netflix’s « Tiger King » this spring. Carole Baskin, an outspoken animal rights activist, runs the animal shelter, which not only houses tigers but also a variety of species, including ocelots, bobcats, leopards and pumas.

« All of the local volunteers and staff met today to discuss what happened. Carole was reminding everyone that this type of tragedy can happen in a blink of an eye and that we can’t relax our guard around these dangerous cats for a second, « said Big Cat Rescue.

« The fact that such a violation can occur despite our rigorous safety protocols and excellent security only confirms the inherent danger in dealing with these animals and why we need the Big Cat Public Safety Act to prevent that they are not persecuted in backyards across the country and in sanctuaries where wonderful people like Candy Couser are committed to caring for those rejected by the pay-to-play industry, « the facility said.
