West Virginia ended the 2019-20 season as between four and six seeds in most NCAA tournament projections. Unfortunately for the climbers, they could never get high on the wave that ended their season with a win over the top five Baylor. Instead, Bob Huggins’ roster returned to Morgantown – after a brief trip to Kansas City for an unplayed Big 12 championship – and had a long, arduous journey into this week of finally ending the 2020-21 season will begin. Expectations are sky high, and ESPN’s Joe Lunardi originally predicted the climbers would receive four seeds in this year’s NCAA tournament. Now? He goes even higher.

In the latest bracketology on Tuesday, Lunardi awarded West Virginia three seeds in Region Two. Gonzaga would have been No.. 1 seed in this region, with Baylor, Virginia and Villanova the other No.. are. 1 seed. In total, he would have six Big 12 conference teams in the NCAA tournament, although Oklahoma would be one of the last eight teams.

Lunardi went a step further ahead of the season, making parentheses in case this year’s NCAA tournament had a limited number of entrants. There was the traditional 68-team bracket (with the WVU seat mentioned above), but also a 48-team and a 16-team bracket.

In the 48-team group, ten teams and ten automatic qualifiers are kept out of the postseason, and the top four seeds in each region get a bye. In this scenario, West Virginia is still a No.. 3 seeds, goodbye received. You would then be the No.. 6 Florida No.. 11 Georgia State game. The no. 1 seed stay the same.

There are no automatic qualifiers in the 16-team group and the committee simply selects the best 16 teams available, with the individual rule no more than four teams per conference (and only one team per conference per ‘region’ in the region includes bracket). Again, West Virginia would get a three-seed, with Gonzaga, Wisconsin (2) and Arizona State (4) rounding off their quadrant. The Big 12 conference would take four teams, but Texas – which had received four seeds in the other scenarios – would be ousted due to the four-team rule. Baylor (1), Kansas (2) and Texas Tech (4) are the other teams in the league that would make it.
