Hollywood A-listers Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, and Paul Rudd celebrated alongside lifelong fans as their club, Wrexham, won promotion back to the Football League on Saturday. The Welsh club came from behind to beat Boreham Wood 3-1, bringing tears of joy to fans and owners alike. Emotional Wrexham fans spilled out onto the pitch at the final whistle, while their Hollywood owners cried in the directors’ box. Since the takeover by Reynolds and McElhenney in 2021, the club has surged in popularity around the world, thanks in part to their Disney+ We Are Wrexham documentary.
At half-time, staff at Maesgwyn Hall, where many fans were watching the game, said they had sold 6,600 pints so far and needed many more kegs to make it to the end of the match. However, it wasn’t straightforward for nervy Wrexham as they were held 1-1 at half-time. Fans were nervous, with one saying, « It’s okay but we could be doing a lot better. It’s been a bit scrappy from us in our defence. We could be doing a lot better… I am nervous, very nervous. »
The club’s popularity has grown substantially since the takeover, with Paris Trow, manager of Maesgwyn Hall, saying that the city had changed substantially over the last few years. « It’s just so much more busy, the amount of people coming… everyone’s talking about Wrexham. It’s just madness, » she added. « It’s doing so much for the Welsh language, for Wales, Welsh culture, everything in general. It’s just absolutely brilliant. »
Wrexham’s promotion back to the Football League is a significant achievement for the club and its owners, who have brought renewed attention to the Welsh team. With Hollywood stars in the directors’ box and fans celebrating on the pitch, it’s clear that Wrexham’s success is a cause for celebration.
